Student Health Disclosure and Self-Medication

Policy

If a student has a health problem, which could interfere with his/her ability to safely perform in the clinical arena and/or compromise the health or safety of patients or other staff, the student must identify this to the Clinical Instructor/Supervisor on site at their assigned clinical education center.

The Clinical Instructor will confer with the Program Director and/or the Program Clinical Coordinator to assess whether a referral to the student health physician is needed or if the student must suspend their participation in the Clinic.

If a student needs to self-administer certain prescription medications* during Clinical, the student must confer with the Clinical Instructor/Supervisor prior to taking the medication.

The Clinical Instructor may refer the student to Prompt Care or other appropriate health services for evaluation of condition and/or observation of the self-administration.  If referral is deemed necessary, the Clinical Instructor shall notify the Program Director or Program Clinical Coordinator before the close of the same day.

* Prescribed Medications covered by this policy include: 

  • All injectable medications 
  • All medications which may interfere with mental judgment
  • All medications, which may cause sedation
