Mission, Goals and Philosophy

Our missionMission

In response to the needs of the Radiologic medical community in the greater Boston region and the general population it serves, the Medical Radiography program, sponsored by Regis College and supported by Hallmark Health System through the Lawrence Memorial / Regis College Radiography Program, endeavors to prepare qualified graduates to enter the profession as Medical Radiographers who are:

  • Competent in the performance of Radiologic exams stipulated within the content specifications published for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist’s Radiography examination
  • Competent in providing for the care and safety of their patients
  • Compassionate and Ethical in the execution of their practice
  • Effective in oral and written communication with their patients and with other medical staff members
  • Radiologic Science professionals who demonstrate a critical thinking based, scientifically founded, problem solving approach in their practice
  • Dedicated to continuing their professional development throughout their professional career in Radiology.

Goals/Objectives:

The major outcomes-based Program goals/objectives include the following:

  • To graduate no fewer than 85% of a given entrance class of students, within three years of their start date
  • To have no fewer than 85% of a given Medical Radiography course enrollment pass that course
  • To demonstrate that no fewer than 85% of a given graduating class successfully pass the certification exam (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists exam in Radiography), in their first attempt
  • To demonstrate that no fewer than 85% of program graduates, within six months after graduation, succeed in either securing a position in Radiography, pursue an education in a second Radiology modality or other health profession, or enroll in any program of study at the Baccalaureate or Masters level
  • To demonstrate that the Radiologic Medical Community served by the program, considers its graduates to be highly competent and an asset to the Profession
  • To demonstrate that the majority of its graduates engage in continuing education and professional growth and development beyond what is required to maintain their credentials, throughout their professional career
  • To demonstrate that the majority of its graduates are competent communicators, both verbally and in writing.

In addition to the above goals/objectives, the program determines its success through feedback obtained from Qualitative measures, including:

  • Student surveys/questionnaires issued at the end of each Medical radiography course, at the end of each academic year, six months and five years after graduation
  • Academic and Clinical Faculty evaluations
  • Academic and Clinical Course evaluations
  • Questionnaires, periodically issued to the radiology department Managers of the major hospitals in the greater Boston region, who either serve as Clinical Education settings for the program, and/or have employed our graduates.

As a component of the Program’s quality assurance program, the program faculty regularly analyze results obtained from its outcome measures, student performance and sources of feedback. After analyzing the results for trends, strengths and/or weaknesses, the faculty reports their findings, along with recommendations, to the Program Advisory Committee and ultimately to the Lawrence Memorial/Regis College Joint Executive Committee. Suggestions and recommendations from these sources, if deemed appropriate, are implemented. After implementation, outcomes changes/improvements will be tracked and reported as above.

The Program considers the degree to which it meets or exceeds the benchmarks stated in the above outcome goals/objectives, and the degree of positive feedback it receives from its other measures, to be the primary measures of the success of the program in meeting its Mission.

Philosophy:

The basic philosophical tenets forming the foundation on which the Program functions include the following:

  • The belief that, given the proper academic guidance and support, individuals who possess the basic program entry requirements and apply themselves appropriately as students studying to enter a health care profession, should be able to succeed in the program.
  • The belief that practitioners in Medical Radiography, as members of the family of Health Care Professions, must consistently hold themselves to the highest standards of ethics, personal and professional behavior and performance quality, as they deliver their service to their patients and work within the Health Care milieu.
  • The belief that the education of a Medical Radiographer is an on-going process, continuing after completion of the entry level program of study.
  • The belief that in order to assure the public that the services rendered by Radiologic Health care professionals are consistently of the highest quality and are reflective of the current state-of-the-art of the profession and the Medical Radiography Program, those preparing to enter the profession must learn to base their practice on a critical thinking and problem solving model. Furthermore, the student must develop through their best efforts, the affective, cognitive, and psychomotor skills requisite for entry into the profession as a competent, thinking, caring, problem solving professional.
  • The strong belief that the relationship that must be fostered between the Program and its constituent Clinical Education Settings is one of equal partners in educating the Medical Radiography student.
